As Seattle area wedding photographers we work at amazing wedding venues in Washington and beyond. Wedding venues that offer a mix of outdoor and indoor spaces are the most flexible for couples – and they offer the most diverse backdrop for your wedding day photos. Kalley and Eric were married at Green Gates at Flowing Lake in Snohomish, Washington.
This venue has a fantastic open bluff that overlooks the Cascade Mountain Range and shoreline. The reception was held in the open air covered barn structure that, once night falls, literally glows with rustic romantic twinkly lights. We fell in love with the venue and admire the owner’s vision and hospitality for clients and vendors. We are proud to list Green Gates at Flowing Lake as a preferred vendor and are so excited to be one of their preferred vendors.
We asked Kerry & Debbie Horner a few key questions we know couples have when trying to locate a venue.
How long has your venue been open?
The very first wedding at Green Gates was for our daughter’s best friend. We hosted her wedding because she is like a daughter to us. That was in 2009. When she posted her photos online, we were flooded with inquiries from people we didn’t even know. That’s when we knew that this place was something special, and we had to share it with others.
What is your typical wedding season start/end time frame?
Until the extensive renovations to the big barn are completed – which will enable us to offer the venue year-round – we are a seasonal venue. Our season begins mid-May and goes until mid-October.
Do you allow outside catering (outside of your list of preferred vendors)?
We do currently welcome outside professional caterers. If we ever decide to adopt a mandatory list of caterers, we will offer a wide variety and number from which to choose.
Please describe what your role is on the day of the wedding.
We are very hands-on and available during the entire event because we want our clients to have the reassurance that we care about their event being as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.
When we were at your venue we heard you talk about how you designed the grounds to be very photogenic.
Green Gates is a photographer’s playground. With every new project and addition to the venue, we are mindful of the visual allure and photographic memories that will ensue. The photographs are the lasting memories of a couple’s special day. Practically every square foot of the grounds at Green Gates offers a gorgeous and unique backdrop.
What has been the biggest surprise about being a wedding venue operator?
We are constantly delighted and amazed at how we are all so inter-connected. We meet people from all walks of life, from all over the U.S. and even from other countries. Somewhere along the line, we discover that we have friends, family, or experiences in common.
For more information contact Kerry and Debbie. You might want to hurry – 2016 Saturdays are nearly all booked. There are currently several Fridays and Sundays still open.

The sweeping vistas of the tracks with a backdrop of Mt Rainier are breathtaking. We didn’t realize the diversity of this Seattle area wedding venue. At Emerald Downs you can have an intimate outdoor wedding or one to accommodate 800+ guests.
Truly the biggest asset is the knowledgeable staff that assist couples with the important details. As vendors, we love detailed and helpful venue staff. It makes for a cohesive day and happy couple.
At Emerald Downs the tables, linen and china are included in the packages – as are bar and wait staff.
The venue is one of the most versatile in the region – it has indoor and outdoor options and, it sure can accommodate the masses. What struck us was the price point. Emerald Downs is, hands down, one of the best values in King County.
We want images at this venue so if you book your wedding at Emerald Downs and decide to hire Firstlight Photography and book us by March 2016, we will provide an extra hour of photography service as our gift.
My all time favorite thing overheard at a wedding happened at Jesse and Alyssa’s backyard event.
It was quite obvious at first glance that the details were just hit out of the park by Alyssa’s mom Pauline. When a guest said, It looks like “Pinterest threw up back here,” Pauline wore that quip like a badge of honor. Her vision was worthy of the finest bridal magazine spread. It was quite editorial and rich in texture and detail. And we loved photographing every single element.
The wedding was small and personal with a guest list of 21. The couple just bought their first home so the bottom line was to keep the wedding affordable yet memorable. They chose a venue that was quite familiar – Alyssa’s childhood back yard which has a backdrop of Dash Point State Park.
The details were exquisite. The color palette was muted and highlighted by pops of color from the Pike Place Flowers. Friends and neighbors were there to lend helping hands to make this wedding very personal. The catering was done by a family neighbor and a groomsman picked the music. Alyssa’s mom served as her wedding planner and designer.
To keep costs down, they did some shopping online and sourced items on Craigslist and Etsy. This really paid off and they spent $4,000 for all decorations, food, drinks, and extras.
We can’t get enough of these details!

Lyn and Taylor are expecting their first child in November and Firstlight Photography was delighted to get to work with them tonight. They are visiting from California so we were able to sneak in a maternity shoot before they travel home. We couldn’t ask for better weather. We can’t wait to meet their little one.
Thanks to you both for letting us be a part of this special moment in time.
In between summer weddings we are having fun with engagement sessions. Congrats Danelle and John. We can’t wait for your wedding!
Engagements sessions are a great way for couples to get to know their photography team and to have the opportunity to become more relaxed in front of the camera. When we arrive for your wedding you are more at ease since we have already worked together.
Wondering what to wear for your engagement session? We will help you with wardrobe questions and we have visual guides thanks to Pinterest.
Interested in engagement photo ideas? We have that too!
Here is a sneak peek of several wedding photos from Hally and Lou’s Salish Lodge wedding. With a backdrop of the lodge and Snoqualmie Falls, Firstlight Photography knew this wedding would serve up amazing images. Working with this couple and the wedding venue was a real treat.
Seeing both brides as they appeared in their gowns was a breathtaking moment. Two elegant brides with the most amazing dresses – what is not to love about this day? Their love shines through and it truly shows in their photographs.
We are honored to be able to photograph the weddings of some of the most amazing people. It truly is a labor of love. Thank you to all of our clients for letting us be responsible for capturing your wedding photography. Truly this is a job we take very seriously. We know we get but one chance to deliver and we work our hardest to exceed your expectations.

We love being a part of so many fabulous Seattle elopements. Are you eloping and want to get married in Seattle? By popular demand, Firstlight Photography has created an elopement package (the “Micro”) for our couples. The elopements we photograph take us all over the Pacific Northwest. Our Seattle based elopement photography work takes us from the ski slopes to Snoqualmie Falls and everywhere in between. We have even photographed a ceremony in a park – and the witnesses were local joggers.
Some of our couples want an intimate wedding venue and we have found a little piece of paradise right here in our backyard. Bed, Baked and Beyond: Cherry Hill Guesthouse and Venue is a Victorian guest house in Seattle’s Central Area. This is the PRIMO site for your petite wedding. You and your guests can take over the venue for your petite wedding. You can rent the first floor and backyard garden for events – for under $500. And, if you and your guests want to stay in one location, this large house is appointed with four unique and stylish guest rooms. Prices range from $60 to $120 per night.
We toured the venue during a recent open house. We had met Abil and Melissa before at the Burlycon Convention where they had a pop up vintage boutique that was one of the biggest highlights for us. Melissa has an amazing vintage collection of clothing including wedding gowns from many different decades. These were on display all throughout the home.
Melissa and Abil will help you plan your special event, rehearsal dinner or petite wedding. In our time at their home we knew we wanted to spend more time with them. They love what they do and have such a passion for this home and their clients. They are amazing conversationalists. Melissa is a chef so she serves up an amazing spread and Abil is a nutritionist who makes sure guests have a good selection of fresh fruits and good eats. These two know Seattle so they serve as the perfect bed and breakfast hosts. They will help guide your stay and adventures.
We were fortunate to be able to sample the Tin Box Bakeshop cakes that are a specialty at the venue. Planning your wedding or event? The owners will help coordinate tasty desserts and can even source your bouquets and flowers from the local Pike Place Market.
See for yourself and give Bed, Baked and Beyond: Cherry Hill a call to book your party, engagement, rehearsal dinner or your petite wedding or elopement.
They are also equipped with an outdoor room aptly called the Potting Shed. This is a great outdoor lounge that overlooks the beautiful gardens. This venue is a cannabis friendly location.
You know there is never a dull moment in our work flow. We are surrounded by wonderful clients and friends that are in the wedding industry. And, we have a knack for finding the truly unique and energizing projects.
Recently we happened upon a very exciting new magazine called Rock Bride. The first issue is under production and will release later in the Spring. The magazine is also producing a wedding show in Bellevue this fall. We are told the show will have live entertainment, vendor booths, cake tastings, wine and beer tastings, two fashion shows, a Men’s Zone and lots of give-aways.
We met with the publisher and knew instantly that we must sign up for the show. Serenity Armstrong, publisher extraordinare, had us from the moment she explained her concept. “This is not your mother’s wedding” has become the magazine’s tagline. BINGO. Our enthusiasm helped land a few stylized shoots. These are the types of shoots that THRILL us. Trying new techniques, working with top notch wedding industry vendors, talented models all the while being able to create something that will hopefully help inspire engaged couples plan their unique wedding.
Our clients are looking for something different. They want a modern twist on their wedding. Granted, this modern wedding might include vintage flair with the height of elegance and sparkle or it might involve a Time Travel Theme or a combination somewhere in between. So what makes something a modern wedding? We are seeing couples that are making their own traditions. We are seeing themed weddings emerge, destination weddings, hybrid elopements, weddings with unique entertainment for guests, pop-up weddings and lots of LGBT weddings – which makes our hearts sing.
While we eagerly await for the release of the first issue of Rock This Bride, we can only show very basic sneak peek photos. Here are a few from our stylized shoots. You can only guess what we were up to…because we can’t tell you!
The first image is of our models back in their street clothes. The rest are hints. But, our lips are sealed!
Are you planning a summer or fall rustic outdoor wedding? Firstlight Photography has photographed over 150 weddings and are adept at photographing outdoor weddings as well as barn / rustic venues.
We come prepared with our full gear including lighting and an assortment of cameras and lenses. Kier, owner and one of our lead photogs, is equipped with his “murse” (his male handbag, dare we say man purse?) that truly is like the Tardis – bigger on the inside. We have items that come in handy for the couple and their wedding party and our camera bags weigh in at around 40 lbs each. So, we spend a fair bit of time working out in the off season!
Lighting and weather conditions change frequently so we are always prepared to ensure our couples get the photos they imagined. While we always look polished and presentable we do so in a manner that affords us the ability to cover rough terrain. We sport sensible, waterproof and off road worthy foot gear so we don’t miss a beat.
Are you looking for just the right Washington wedding venue? We know lots of vendors and have a preferred vendor list on our website. We would be happy to meet for a consultation to review your wedding plans and help you get a jump start to your big day.
As wedding photographers we would by lying if we didn’t say we love working with our grooms. Dare we say they are never running behind due to a salon delay? We seem to get extra time with them on the big day and this is where the magic happens. There is nothing more awesome that the squirrel-y nature of a pack of men preparing for (and celebrating) a wedding.
One of our favorite calls was from a groom that wanted to stage a pic for his wedding album. “Can you be in our room in a few minutes?” Well, heck yeah. We traveled to Eastern WA for this wedding so we had some extra time on our hands and were booked at the same hotel room. The clock was set right before the ceremony was to begin and the debauchery of the moment was caught on film.
2014 will be filled with many more new grooms and their rat packs. Often times cool or nerdy cool but always genuine – and always having fun. As the husband and wife duo behind Firstlight Photography we just can’t get enough of our wedding dudes. Here is to an adventure filled 2014 wedding season!
