and the winner is…

Okay, we are not sure.  We love both designs that Camron from Level 70 Design did for us. We’re very impressed that he gave us what we wanted when we ourselves weren’t quite sure.  Which one of the designs do you think should be the new face of Firstlight Photography weddings?

What do you think?  We are considering including the word “weddings” on this page.  Is it needed or is the bride a dead give away?

option 1 or option 2?

the other half

This picture was taken at Union Station during the first wedding that my husband Kier and I worked together.  As the behind the scenes person at Firstlight Photography I decided now that our kids are getting older,  it was time to join in the fun of taking photos.  Since I was a child I have always had a camera and a love for photography but Kier has worked hard to teach me the technical aspects I used to just “fake.”

other duties as assigned

The thing that has surprised me most about shooting weddings is all of the “other duties as assigned” that pop up.  I can’t tell you how many flowers I have pinned on the gents – not to mention a few bridal bouquets have required a quick fix.  I find people.  I find rings.  I give guests directions via cell (for those that know me well – this is down right scary).  I straighten ties.  I help repair unfortunate accidents that sometimes happen to cakes.  I work with the wedding planners to ensure we understand the timing of the event.  I even take the family dog for a walk around the grounds.  I feel lucky to be invited to the best parties around the Puget Sound – and I enjoy being able to help smooth out the wrinkles that always pop up and make things interesting.  I travel with my McGyver Bag of tricks and supplies.  It comes in very handy.

Mostly I take photos.  I take this picture at every wedding I shoot with Kier.  I am usually in the background when he is doing portraits so you can see my perspective below!  I just can’t resist this shot.

BEFORE

know what you are getting

One of the most important things you can do before you hire your wedding photographer is to ask about his post production experience.  What are you looking for?  If you don’t know, make sure you ask lots of questions when you review portfolios.   What comes with your package?  Make sure you know before you sign your contract.

candidly speaking

When shooting candids the intent is to capture the fleeting moment – which means you sometimes get the wall outlet and power chord in your shot too.   At Firstlight Photography all of our images receive the basic color and exposure corrections but we also do a lot of other editing you might not notice (which means we have done our job).  Aside from aesthetic changes, see if you can find the missing objects in the AFTER image.  In addition to “erasing” several objects, the post production work involved a layering, vignette and other techniques that we like to experiment with for that perfect album photo or canvas print.

firstlight-photography-show-weddingYay!  We did it!  Kier and I were so happy that our very first wedding show turned out to be a success.  We had never done a booth before so we showed up with our McGyver filled suitcase and were ready for any curve ball.  Kier’s mom, Monika, was a life saver.  She helped us get the booth organized and our wall installations situated.  We even had an hour to spare so we enjoyed a nice breakfast and conversation.

We met so many amazing couples and vendors at the South Sound Magazine Wedding and Event Show.  Paula and her crew were on the ball.   I saw Paula the week before at a networking meeting – she was working it for all of the vendors!  We were able to meet some fabulous vendors that we will continue to network with.

We’re booking up for summer thanks to help from our first show.  We called Paula and asked her to book us for her September show in Tacoma.  It is a two day event so we hope Monika will come back to help!wedding-show-firstlight-photography-suitcase-camera

Robyn, the owner of Ubiquitous Journey, has invited me to be a featured artist at her in-store gallery in Puyallup.  I met Robyn through a Kieran’s List  networking meeting and paid a visit to her store.   The store is a one-stop shop for natural and earth friendly products.

Robyn carries a wide array of natural products for infants and adults including organic cotton clothing, personal care items, teas, supplements,  jewelry and beaded art, home decor and a variety of other goods.  Visit her website to register for the next beginning yoga class or to learn how to make medicine bags.  It is truly the most unique store in Puyallup.

While you are there, please check out my photographs!  For those that are most familiar with my wedding work you will get to see what I do in my spare time.  So, stop by and check out my landscape portraits.

Engagement Photo Session in Tacoma

Engagement Photo Session in Tacoma

Planning a wedding is filled with so many decisions.  Spending the time to find the right photographer for your event is key because of the importance of documenting every detail.  Lets face it, your photographer only gets one chance at so many key moments.  The day is filled with excitement and emotion  – it goes by in a flash for couples.

Our job is to make sure we catch all of the little things that you might not have time to see.  We also deliver the posed and group photos and we have a fantastic time capturing candids of our couples and their wonderful and very amusing guests.

How do you know what photographer is right for you?  We recommend that you take some time and research websites for local photographers.  Make some calls and spend some time getting to know your professionals.

We sit down and meet with prospective couples over coffee and take time to learn about your wedding and your photography needs.  Reviewing our portfolios is very helpful because it not only gives you a sense of our work, but we begin to understand your personality and what types of photos you like.

We work with many local wedding professionals and can also help to answer other wedding questions.  To arrange a meeting time call us at 253.335.7958 or send an Email (kier@firstlight-photography.com)!

We got to know Kristin and Jason at their engagement session and we attended their wedding rehearsal.  Both are really good ways to get to know our clients – and their families.  We could tell right away that the wedding was going to be a blast.

We were really moved by the efforts of this couple’s family and friends.  The reception was elegant and so much fun.  Everyone seemed to help out and the entire event was flawless.

Kristin is a girl’s softball coach so she hired her team to cater the reception which was hosted at the Orting Grange.  The girls did a phenomenal job and should really consider catering as a viable career.

The new couple, their parents and the wedding guests were all having fun.  We think the photos capture the spontaneity and good nature of this amazing couple.

It was our first shoot at the Orting Grange and we can’t wait to shoot another wedding there.  The lighting is beautiful and the hall offers an intimate setting for receptions with the perfect dance floor.

David and Kristen wanted an engagement shoot that would feature a Seattle City scape so we figured what better place than Gas Works Park.

On location shots provide a rich backdrop for engagement portraits.  Kristen and David were really relaxed on this day and they just went for it.

The park was crowded on this sunny day, but everyone was very helpful and we can’t tell you how many bicyclists and joggers paused to stay out of shots.  In addition, many stopped and watched from a distance.  With all of the equipment and lights it looked like David and Kristen were the celebrity couple of the day.

Most Firstlight Photography packages include an engagement session.  These sessions are great ice breakers that allow us to get to know our couples on a different level.  It really helps put everyone at ease on the big day.
