You know there is never a dull moment in our work flow.  We are surrounded by wonderful clients and friends that are in the wedding industry.  And, we have a knack for finding the truly unique and energizing projects.

Recently we happened upon a very exciting new magazine called Rock Bride.  The first issue is under production and will release later in the Spring.  The magazine is also producing a wedding show in Bellevue this fall.  We are told the show will have live entertainment, vendor booths, cake tastings, wine and beer tastings, two fashion shows, a Men’s Zone and lots of  give-aways.

We met with the publisher and knew instantly that we must sign up for the show.  Serenity Armstrong, publisher extraordinare, had us from the moment she explained her concept.  “This is not your mother’s wedding” has become the magazine’s tagline.  BINGO.  Our enthusiasm helped land a few stylized shoots.  These are the types of shoots that THRILL us.  Trying new techniques, working with top notch wedding industry vendors, talented models all the while being able to create something that will hopefully help inspire engaged couples plan their unique wedding.

Our clients are looking for something different.  They want a modern twist on their wedding.  Granted, this modern wedding might include vintage flair with the height of elegance and sparkle or it might involve a Time Travel Theme or a combination somewhere in between.  So what makes something a modern wedding?  We are seeing couples that are making their own traditions.  We are seeing themed weddings emerge, destination weddings, hybrid elopements, weddings with unique entertainment for guests, pop-up weddings and lots of LGBT weddings – which makes our hearts sing.

While we eagerly await for the release of the first issue of Rock This Bride, we can only show very basic sneak peek photos.  Here are a few from our stylized shoots.  You can only guess what we were up to…because we can’t tell you!

The first image is of our models back in their street clothes.  The rest are hints.  But, our lips are sealed!

Looking for a night out, a great date or a little fun? The Washington Center for the Performing Arts, South Puget Sound’s largest performing arts facility, is located right here in Olympia. It hosts a vibrant series of national and international touring artists from a broad spectrum of genres and styles. It supports local shows and Broadway hits such as Cats and A Chorus Line. Speakers, comedians and social rights activists also call the Center home. The experience is enhanced by the beauty of the location, the plush elegance of the facility and the warmth and amiability of the atmosphere.

Below is a list of my top three most anticipated events for the next couple of months. Not to your taste? Find the complete CALENDER OF EVENTS here.

The Intern’s Top Three
1.San Francisco Opera Cinema Series: Lucia di Lammermoor
April 10, 2011

“The emotionally fragile Lucia is driven to madness when manipulated to marry a man she does not love. Featuring the most famous mad scene in the repertory and full of ravishingly beautiful melodies, this timeless bel canto masterpiece evokes the passion and desperation of a woman used by her brother as a political pawn. Superstar Natalie Dessay owns this virtuosic role. Also starring Giuseppe Filianoti, Gabriele Viviani and Oren Gradus. Recorded Summer 2008, War Memorial Opera House, San Francisco” (website).

2. Ballet Folklorico “Quetzalli”
April 20, 2011

“Founded in 1985 (the same year as the Washington Center!), this group has crisscrossed the globe exciting audiences of all ages. Their visual fiesta of culture and folklore features many regional dances of old Mexico, in particular, their home state of Veracruz (birthplace of the world famous “La Bamba”). The music, performed live on authentic stringed instruments, punctuates the meticulous movement, colorful clothing and perfect pulse established by the dancers. Earning standing ovations from Cuba to Malaysia, Quetzalli proves they are one of Mexico’s most popular exports” (website)!

When we started offering our “Little Black Book” boudoir photo sessions we new we had the right idea, but the response has ben amazing.  Recently I got a call from one of our brides when she wanted some special photos to give her husband on their upcoming anniversary.  We actually got a message from her within seconds of our first posting about doing our Little Black Book sessions.  She was more than happy to share the photos, but since hubby hasn’t seen them yet we’re only only posting a small preview of her photos right now.  You can see more at our WEB SITE as well.

While you can’t see it in any of these photos Kari Baumann did the make-up for this session as well as for her wedding and she did a great job.  It was good to work with her again.

It’s taken me a while to post these photos.  Summer is a crazy time for a wedding photographer and now that things are calming down a little bit I’ve been able to post theres.  This wedding took place on a bluff overlooking the Sound and was one of the most beautiful locations I’ve ever had the pleasure to shoot a wedding in.  The Groom had been a bull rider in the rodeo and they both love horses, so the bride arrived at the wedding on horseback and at the end of the ceremony they both got on the horse and rode away.  It was all very cool.

While I’ve shot a lot of weddings I’d never claim that they all start looking alike, BUT from time to time one of them will really stand out from the rest.  The reasons vary, it could be a couple you really build a bond with, a really cool location or sometimes it is just the day they decide to get married on.

Yesterday, Friday the 13th, I shot a wedding that stood out for all of those reasons.  The couple was very friendly and the bride treated me more like a member of the family than the hired photographer, there was a very interesting cast of characters and NO BRIDESMAIDS! Yes, that’s correct, the bride had 3 guys as bridesmaids, so I guess there were bridesmaids, but no women serving in those rolls.   The bride had some music I’d never heard played at a wedding and walked down the aisle to “Going to the chapel”.   Even after all the weddings we’ve shot it was a day filled with firsts and I’ll never forget it.

I’m at it again!  Four more days of basketball and we were off to a great start yesterday even with the last game not ending until 11:30pm and I was right back at it again at 8am today! I’d be exhausted, but there is a lot of great basketball being played.  Yes, some games aren’t all that great.  Franklin HS just beat Auburn Mt. View by nearly 20 points, but other games have been nail biters right up to the last second.  Yesterday Lakeside beat Hazen by 3 points, but it was just a 1 point game until the last 30 seconds.  That’s an amazing game!

The only real down side is that there aren’t any coaches that put on a fashion show like Jerome Collins from Federal Way, but you can’t have everything.

firstlight-photography-show-weddingYay!  We did it!  Kier and I were so happy that our very first wedding show turned out to be a success.  We had never done a booth before so we showed up with our McGyver filled suitcase and were ready for any curve ball.  Kier’s mom, Monika, was a life saver.  She helped us get the booth organized and our wall installations situated.  We even had an hour to spare so we enjoyed a nice breakfast and conversation.

We met so many amazing couples and vendors at the South Sound Magazine Wedding and Event Show.  Paula and her crew were on the ball.   I saw Paula the week before at a networking meeting – she was working it for all of the vendors!  We were able to meet some fabulous vendors that we will continue to network with.

We’re booking up for summer thanks to help from our first show.  We called Paula and asked her to book us for her September show in Tacoma.  It is a two day event so we hope Monika will come back to help!wedding-show-firstlight-photography-suitcase-camera

Robyn, the owner of Ubiquitous Journey, has invited me to be a featured artist at her in-store gallery in Puyallup.  I met Robyn through a Kieran’s List  networking meeting and paid a visit to her store.   The store is a one-stop shop for natural and earth friendly products.

Robyn carries a wide array of natural products for infants and adults including organic cotton clothing, personal care items, teas, supplements,  jewelry and beaded art, home decor and a variety of other goods.  Visit her website to register for the next beginning yoga class or to learn how to make medicine bags.  It is truly the most unique store in Puyallup.

While you are there, please check out my photographs!  For those that are most familiar with my wedding work you will get to see what I do in my spare time.  So, stop by and check out my landscape portraits.

Recently we have had a chance to shoot a couple of very interesting events, one was a fund raiser for the Bellevue Boys & Girls Club with a James Bond theme.  As part of that theme they had an ice bar set up featuring Pravda Vodka, it was very impressive.  The other event was for the Young Presidents Organization at the Triple Door Theater in Seattle.
